Preparing Your Child for Their First Day at Preschool

TL;DR — Quick Tips

  • Talk positively about attending preschool ahead of time
  • Arrange for a familiarisation visit to KidsCampus or Alora
  • Start a consistent morning routine 2 weeks before the first day
  • Create a short, cheerful goodbye ritual (and don’t sneak away!)
  • Pack a small comfort item
  • Stay calm and positive — your child will mirror your feelings

Starting preschool is a big milestone — not just for children, but for parents too. At KidsCampus Preschool, we understand the mix of excitement and nerves that comes with your child’s first day. While it’s natural to feel anxious about the transition, a little preparation can go a long way in helping your child feel confident and ready for this new adventure. Here are 6 Tips to help prepare your child for their first day with us.

Tip #1: Talk About Preschool Early

Begin introducing the idea of attending preschool 2 weeks before their first day. Share stories about making friends, meeting teachers, reading new books, playing with toys, and exploring the outdoors. Role-play school routines with soft toys, or read books about starting school together — these will help your child relate to characters who may feel the same way.

Tip #2: Arrange a Familiarisation Visit

Familiarity makes everything less daunting. We encourage you to bring your child along when viewing our preschool so they can explore the classrooms and even meet their new teachers. When the environment feels familiar, the first day feels more like a return than a leap into the unknown. If you’ve not done so yet, let us know — we’ll be happy to arrange a familiarisation visit in KidsCampus or Alora Preschool before your child’s first day.

Tip #3: Set a Morning Routine

Children thrive on structure. Establishing a predictable rhythm helps your child feel secure and makes the transition smoother. 2 weeks before their first day, start adjusting their wake-up time, lunch-time, and nap-time to match the preschool routine. For example, at KidsCampus, lunch is typically served at noon, and naptime begins at 1pm. Do check with our Centre Leader for your preschool’s specific timings.

Tip #4: Create a Goodbye Ritual

Saying goodbye can be one of the hardest parts — for both you and your child. Separation anxiety is common and can last anywhere from a few days to over a month. A simple, consistent goodbye routine can help ease this transition.

  • Develop a special ritual: A unique high-5 plus low-5, a blown kiss or kisses on each cheek, or a cheerful phrase like “Mummy loves you, goodbye alligator, see you later before dinner!”.
  • Keep it short and positive: Long, lingering goodbyes makes separation harder. Leave after saying goodbye.
  • Be consistent: Predictability of the morning routine, goodbye special ritual and pick-up time builds security.
  • Use clear language: Tell your child when you’ll be back, in terms they understand — for example, “After teatime”, “After enrichment class”, or “Before dinner.”
  • Never sneak away: Leaving without saying goodbye can break trust.
  • Trust the teachers: Tears will fall and the cries will be loud. Our teachers will support your child through this transition.

Tip #5: Pack a Comfort Item

If you would like, let your child bring a small comfort item — a favourite soft toy, blanket, or family photo that they can access from their cubby. Having something familiar nearby can offer reassurance when they need it most.

Tip #6: Stay Calm and Positive

It’s heartbreaking when you see your child bawl. However, remember that children mirror their parents’ emotions. Even if you feel upset, showing calm confidence and enthusiasm will reassure your child that preschool is a safe and exciting place to be. Be brave, for them.
